The name Punta Gorda means "Broad Point" and dates back to the landing of Ponce de Leon in 1513. It is the only incorporated city in Charlotte County and is more than 14 miles square with approximately 16,000 residents.
Situated approximately 100 miles south of Tampa on the Gulf Coast with easy access from I-75, this community continues to offer leisurely, unhurried living. The Lemon Bay Park and Environmental Center is relatively new and is home to nature displays, a butterfly garden, nature trails and picnic sites overlooking the bay.
Temperatures range from the mid 90s in the summer to the mid to upper 60s in the winter. The rainy season is during the summer and early fall. The temperature of the Gulf water ranges from mid 60s to mid 80s, with soft, mild winds brushing the shore. The waves rarely reach a height of over two feet, rolling onto the beach with a whisper. Often strolling the beaches are pelicans, herons, egrets, cormorants, ibis and sea gulls.
Fishing is a major attraction. Charter boats take fishermen into the Gulf of Mexico where grouper, mackerel, snapper or tarpon will just about jump onto the hook or in the passes, off bridges, in coves or in Lemon Bay, one can catch trout, sheepshead or snook.
Punta Gorda is located in Charlotte County where the old Florida lifestyle of horse farms, cattle ranches, farms and citrus groves remain in the rural areas of the County, only minutes from the heart of civilization.
